Who Can Apply for Name Change in CBSE 10th Certificate?

Among other benefits in CBSE board 10th class, you can apply to amend or rectify your name under following standard conditions:

  • Errors in your name, or the names of your parents/ guardians (typographical, spelling or factual), which are not a mirror of what appears in your school records or admission forms.
  • Changing the legal name after examination (e.g. when a new name has been adopted formally). This normally involves a gazette notification and a court order.
  • Inconsistency or the mismatch of the name, provided in any other official documents (Aadhar, passport, school admission forms) and on CBSE records. The Supreme Court has argued in favour of rights of students at changing CBSE certificates to indicate what they prefer their name to be and why that was a legal switch.
  • Your school head (principal) should forward this claim or request and attach school records and documents.

However, you should be aware:

  • Certain CBSE by-laws were based on restrictions such as changes in name to be made before publication of results or that some official gazette announcement be placed before publication of results but the Supreme Court invalidated such practices.
  • In case of date of birth correction, the deadline is more strict (typically, within a year of the announcement of the result and not after that).
  • The corrections of name or parent name should be in compliance with the records of the school or with the List of Candidates (LOC) provided to CBSE.

To do this, be sure before you apply that it is either a spelling error or complete change of name. Do you need any documents? Has your school provided consistent records?
