About Kayenat

I'm Kayenat Mirza, an online educator at 21K School and the Homeroom Teacher for Grade 5. I teach Mathematics for Grade 5 (Cambridge Primary), along with Grade 5 Science and Global Perspectives.
Teaching Grade 5 across multiple subjects has taught me that engagement is everything. I love making my classes lively — building lessons around interactive tools, real-world examples, and activities that put students at the centre rather than on the sidelines. As a homeroom teacher, I also enjoy being the person my students can count on beyond the subject content.
There's a moment in every online class that I wait for. It isn't when the lesson plan goes perfectly, or when a student solves the problem on the first try. It's smaller than that.
It's when a black square turns into a face.
I teach Grade 5. Mathematics, Science, Global Perspectives — and as their homeroom teacher, everything in between. My classroom has no walls, no chalk dust, no hands shooting up in the back row. It has a screen, a grid of names, and forty minutes.
People assume that makes connection harder. Sometimes it does. But I've learned that children will meet you anywhere, as long as you actually show up for them.
So I show up. I start with a puzzle instead of a heading. I ask about a shopkeeper counting rupees instead of "solve for x." I build little things they can drag and click and break, because a fifth grader who is allowed to break something will explore it for twenty minutes without noticing the time.
And slowly, the squares open.
There was a learner in my class who kept camera off for weeks, typed answers, always correct, always one word. One day we were working on symmetry, and I asked everyone to find something symmetrical in their room. His camera turned on. He held up a butterfly he'd drawn — folded down the middle, both wings matching.
He didn't say much. He didn't have to.
That's the part nobody warns you about when you become a teacher. You think the job is content. It isn't. The content is the doorway. The job is what happens once a child decides to walk through it and trust you with what they think.
I've taught hundreds of lessons. I'll forget most of them.
I won't forget the butterfly.

Kayenat’s Philosophy
Teaching isn't about filling a screen with content — it's about turning it into a window kids want to look through.
