NMC’s Clarification on NIOS Eligibility for NEET UG 2025

In the previous years, the Medical Council of India (MCI) developed confusion by complaining about open school eligibility.

But after that, explicit instructions have been given by the National Medical Commission (NMC), that students with a background of NIOS, can appear for NEET UG 2025.

This announcement was done under the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER), 2023:

• Verification of Eligibility: The NMC has established this fact regarding the NEET eligibility that the subject courses are completed in a recognized board. NIOS is a national board hence students of NIOS can also appear in NEET. And not just NEET, students of NIOS can give JEE too.

• No Discrimination: Children in open schools are not discriminated against. Eligibility in NEET is only based on board basis and academic standards, but not the mode of study.

Although NIOS is also valid in NEET, a student is advised to be keen on the following:

1. Subject Combination

Make sure you take and do the following subjects:

• Physics
• Chemistry
• Biology or biotechnology
• English

Before moving ahead, mind how many subjects are compulsory in 12th. When you do not study each of these subjects as part of your NIOS course, then you will be disqualified.
