India <\/strong>has made tremendous progress<\/strong> in extending student participation in higher education<\/strong>higher education<\/strong><\/strong><\/a>\r\n. With thousands of colleges <\/strong>and millions of enrollments<\/strong>, India has developed an impressive educational infrastructure<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But amid these impressive numbers are some serious issues<\/strong>. A large portion of our graduates still lack employability <\/strong>skills<\/strong>,<\/a>\r\n quality education<\/strong> is still very heterogeneous <\/strong>and for all the promises of innovation, we still see very little of it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For our youth to be adequately prepared to face the challenges of an increasingly globalised world<\/strong>, we need to understand<\/strong> and address the issues<\/strong> surrounding higher education’s integration within<\/strong> Indias education system<\/strong><\/a>\r\n. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 Key Problems of Higher Education in India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

1. Limited Access to Quality Higher Education<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Quality education<\/strong><\/a>\r\n in small towns<\/strong> and other marginalised communities<\/strong> is held back due to a lack of access <\/strong>to institutions that offer robust academics, qualified professors, <\/strong>and good infrastructure. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though India has thousands of colleges and universities<\/strong>, the top institutions are all in cities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of this, many inevitably have to migrate<\/strong>, which puts pressure on their finances<\/strong> or makes them settle for a lesser quality education<\/strong>, expanding the gap<\/strong> between those who have opportunities and those who do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Outdated Curriculum Not Aligned with Industry Needs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Many universities and colleges continue to operate with syllabi that haven’t changed in over 30 years. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many courses are still too theoretical<\/strong>, placing less emphasis on <\/strong>skill-based education<\/strong>.<\/a>\r\n It also diminishes the need<\/strong> to be engaged in<\/strong> solving real-world problems<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Youth are finishing programs with degrees <\/strong>and no <\/strong>practical knowledge<\/strong>,<\/a>\r\n rendering most students incompetent to transition into meaningful employment. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The widening gap<\/strong> between market requirements<\/strong> and student exposure <\/strong>seems to be a prime contributor to youth unemployment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Lack of Qualified and Committed Staff<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many universities operate with less-than-full-staffed<\/strong> schools of business or use part-time faculty <\/strong>who are sometimes undertrained<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poor industry inclusion <\/strong>in post-secondary studies will quickly lead to even well-structured academic programs being outdated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many colleges, especially private institutions, are lacking research funding, labs <\/strong>and mentors<\/strong> for professors and students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if there were better funding, the motivation <\/strong>to seek new ideas or projects is lacking<\/strong>. If India is to be effective in solving local and global issues <\/strong>through innovation<\/strong>, it must develop a strong research culture<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has significant implications for India’s academic reputation <\/strong>globally and for measuring the level of scientific contribution by India<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. High Rates of Graduate Unemployment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many young graduates <\/strong>today are unemployed<\/strong>, or employed in jobs that do not reflect their qualifications<\/strong>, even though they have earned degrees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is due to the absence of <\/strong>soft skills<\/strong><\/a>\r\n, having no internships<\/strong>, and possessing limited <\/strong>problem-solving<\/strong><\/a>\r\n or digital abilities<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem of education and employability mismatch <\/strong>does not just impact individual careers<\/strong>, but the country\u2019s economic growth and productivity <\/strong>as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Inequality in Access Based on Region, Caste, and Gender <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Students from rural areas, lower caste backgrounds, minority communities,<\/strong> and marginalised gender identities<\/strong> face an array of challenges when it comes to access to quality education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These include socio-economic barriers<\/strong> (e.g., financial resources), socio-cultural challenges<\/strong> (e.g., familial expectations and cultural support), and a lack of knowledgeable guardians, cultural capital<\/strong> and preparedness <\/strong>in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Even if they find their way to college, few have the support systems<\/strong> necessary to thrive <\/strong>in higher education. With issues like these rampant in the country, education equity<\/strong><\/a>\r\n becomes a far-fetched idea we can only dream of achieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Regulatory Bottlenecks and Policy Inconsistencies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The higher education system in India is subject to many different regulatory authorities<\/strong> that take overlapping responsibilities<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has resulted in bureaucratic inertia, inefficiency, <\/strong>and difficulty in managing cultural change.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colleges have difficulty introducing new courses, collaborating internationally, <\/strong>and improving <\/strong>methods of teaching<\/strong><\/a>\r\n due to legislative and regulatory roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An efficient reform system can only be developed through simpler, less independent, and better accountable systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students in rural households <\/strong>or from low-income households <\/strong>may miss online lectures, cannot complete virtual laboratories<\/strong>, and lack sufficient synchronous or asynchronous learning<\/strong> opportunities<\/strong> with educators. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Affordability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Private colleges, <\/strong>especially in areas such as engineering, medicine, <\/strong>and management,<\/strong> charge extremely high fees. This makes achieving sustainable education<\/strong><\/a>\r\n a long-drawn-out battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many families take out loans<\/strong> or use their savings<\/strong> to pay for higher education, without any guarantee<\/strong> of getting their money back<\/strong> in the form of a future job<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This deters a lot of qualified students from continuing their college education.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brain Drain: Why Talented Students Leave India <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each year, lakhs of Indian students head for further study abroad. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These opportunities are generated by both the access to better facilities <\/strong>and the perceived increased value of education<\/a>\r\n as a more innovative, practical, universal and relevant<\/strong> approach in universities abroad<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of them never return to India,<\/strong> with significant high-calibre intellectual skills being lost to a brain drain.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To begin to reverse this trend, Indian institutions should <\/strong>improve their policies on access to quality education <\/strong>and provide degree programs that are competitive <\/strong>with those available to students globally<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Need for Reforms in Higher Education Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

National Education Policy<\/strong><\/a>\r\n (NEP), launched in 2020<\/strong>, seeks to transform the education system across levels in India to one that is holistic, multidisciplinary, and flexible<\/strong>, to give as many opportunities for students and communities to achieve their potential for learning and growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This includes some proposed exit points, an emphasis on learning based on the competencies and skills<\/strong> in which students can demonstrate understanding and success, along with an academic bank of credits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success of the NEP is only possible if the changes proposed in the policy are implemented at the institutional level<\/strong> in a way that is faithful and true to the prescribed pace of change. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Role of Technology and Online Platforms in Bridging Gaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Technology in education<\/strong><\/a>\r\n offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to address many issues faced in higher studies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edtech <\/strong>is changing how students learn and engage with differential learning<\/strong>,<\/a>\r\n from personalised learning<\/strong><\/a>\r\n tools, sophisticated virtual labs, <\/strong>assessments<\/strong><\/a>\r\n using AI, <\/strong>to degrees granted online.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, students can now gain access to quality content<\/strong> from anywhere in the world<\/strong> by taking advantage of multiple platforms <\/strong>such as SWAYAM<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Coursera<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Khan Academy<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pathways for properly scaling the implementation of the use of online education<\/strong><\/a>\r\n technology<\/strong> must include a variety of stakeholders<\/strong>, such as the government<\/strong>, private organisations<\/strong> and educators <\/strong>working together as partners<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion: The Future of Higher Education in India <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India is at a point where the quantity of higher education is too normative. It is time to rethink education<\/strong>;<\/a>\r\n now, quality, inclusiveness and relevance<\/strong> must be the focus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognising and addressing systemic problems will require much more than policy modifications<\/strong> and making the option of higher education accessible<\/strong>; it requires a change in mindset, strategic investment in innovation,<\/strong> and the collaboration of government, educational institutions, and industry<\/strong> to reconfigure their respective roles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The higher education system can invigorate youth, create a more corporate innovation approach<\/strong>, and build an entrepreneurial vision for sustainable employment advancement in India.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
