Philosophical Bases

Curriculum has philosophical grounds which are based on assumptions about education, knowledge
and values. They come in handy during the setting of the purpose, content and method of teaching
.

Different philosophies like idealism, realism and pragmatism are involved in what and why to teach. These foundations ensure that education is moral to create and generate learners and a society which is critical and meaningful.

2. Psychological Bases

Psychological underpinnings take into account the mental state, skills
, interests and the stage of development of the learner. They lead teachers towards developing a curriculum based on the best way learners learn. Of interest in this area are learning theories and individual differences.

With this basis, child-based learning is promoted, which is more stimulating, more efficient and more related to the needs and psychological development of students.

3. Sociological Bases

The sociological backgrounds emphasise the role of society, culture and social values in determining curriculum. Education is geared towards fulfilling the social needs and also to make the students good citizens.

It is on this basis that the curriculum is relevant and helps the learners to fit back into society to give back.

4. Historical Bases

Historical foundations are the reflection of the historical experiences and occurrences in education. They assist in knowing how the curriculum has been changing. Throughout history, teachers have been able to learn of the previous failures and also the successes.

Such a foundation guarantees continuity and enhancement in education and enables the curriculum to evolve whilst maintaining important knowledge and traditions.

Other Types of Bases of Curriculum

Other curriculum bases are scientific, economic, technological, and political bases, and such bases affect the design of the curriculum since they make sure that the education is up-to-date, practical, skill-based and is aware of the needs of the society.

1. Scientific Bases

Scientific foundations of curriculum development are the application of research, evidence and rational thought. They ensure that the content is right, up-to-date and based on pre-existing knowledge. It is based on this that critical thinking and inquiry-based learning
develop.

It enables the students to acquire a scientific attitude, the value of facts, experiment and innovation in learning and in their lives.

2. Economic Bases

Economic bases relate the curriculum to the economic needs of society and the job market. They help provide the students with the skills required in employment and productivity.

This foundation targets professional education, competency building and fiscal awareness. It makes sure that education can be used to achieve economic growth, as well as making people into self-reliant and independent people, and transforming them so that they can earn a living.

3. Political Bases

Political foundations are concerned with how the policies of the government, ideologies and national objectives can affect the curriculum. They ensure that education promotes a sense of citizenship and nationalism and awareness of rights and responsibilities.

The political structure and priorities of any nation embodied in this base can make learners understand the system of governance and democracy, and their role in society.

6 Importance of the Bases of Curriculum

The relevance of the foundations of curriculum lies in the fact that it guides a successful, applicable and well-organised learning towards the overall growth of a learner. Curriculum bases are significant since they are followed by.

1. Provides a Clear Direction

Curriculum foundations give an appropriate framework for how to come up with educational programs. They assist the teachers in knowing what to teach, how to teach it and why it must be taught.

Such orientation will make sure that the curriculum is structured, meaningful and intentional without creating ambiguity and making the teaching exercise more resourceful and productive.

2. Matches Learner Needs

To make the education specific to the needs, interests and abilities of the students, curriculum bases make sure that the education is tailored to suit those needs.

They take into consideration differences and stages of development. This not only makes the learning process more significant and exciting to the student but also allows him or her to understand the concepts more easily.

3. Showcase Different Cultures

The curriculum is based on sociological aspects which are reflective of cultural diversity. They help in formulating traditions, values and customs in education. This will ease the burden of learning and valuing other cultures and being inclusive.

The students would be informed about the world and have a bigger picture, and this would lead them to coexist in a world of different people.

4. Helps Achieve Educational Goals

Curriculum-based mediation in the construction of clear educational educational objectives
. They make certain that there is correspondence between teaching and learning activities with desired outcomes.

This will help in measuring success and remaining goal-oriented. The result is a superior education that is more positive in terms of knowledge, skills and values of students.

5. Assist Overall Development

The bases of the curriculum are the holistic growth of students in terms of intellectual, emotional, social and moral growth.

They make sure that learning is not classroom-based and is personality-building oriented. This will make the students well-rounded and able to handle matters in real life as well as give back to society.

6. Support Effective Teaching

The curriculum foundations will equip the educators with a clue of the methodology/strategies selection. They assist in creating lessons which would be capable of accommodating the styles and abilities of the students in learning.

This increases the efficacy of teaching, allows teaching to be more interactive and engaging and enables the student to learn faster
and comprehend better.

Components of Curriculum

Curriculum components are the most important areas of education planning that involve objectives, content, instructional methods, evaluation
and learning experiences to facilitate effective learning.

1. Objective and Goals

Education and expected learning outcomes are determined by goals and objectives that drive the agenda.

Strong goals assist teachers in concentrating on the intended results and in addition, maintain learning and teaching processes germane, significant and consistent with the aims of the schooling.

2. Subject Matter

Subject matter may be termed as the content or areas of the curriculum. It is the source of knowledge, concepts and skills which students need to develop.

This fact has ensured that it has become highly structured and hence brought about clarity, relevance and flow of learning where students learn bit by bit in a variety of subjects and at different levels.

3. Teaching Methods

The methods and plans of the curriculum provision are known as the teaching approaches. They will consist of talks, discussions, activities, and e-resources.

Best practices assist students in studying in classrooms, and the activities involved in best practices are interesting and simple to follow based on the requirements and learning styles of the students, and can help in achieving the objectives of the curriculum successfully.

4. Evaluation and Assessment

Assessment and evaluation
is a gauge of learning and students’ performance. They help in achieving the attainment of objectives.

Such measures as tests, assignments, and observations provide not only teachers with feedback on how they can improve their teaching strategies but also ensure comprehension and increased academic achievement.

5. Learning Experience

Learning experience is a mix of all activities and interactions through which students experience during the learning process. It goes beyond the textbooks, and it involves hands-on work, discussion and application of the same in practical life.

Positive learning experiences make learning enjoyable and effective, as well as worthwhile, and students are able to build knowledge, skills, attitudes and confidence
to learn throughout their life.

Top 6 Advantages of the Bases of Curriculum

The advantages of curriculum foundations ensure the structured, applicable and productive learning that facilitates building the learner and improving the teaching and learning results.

1. Makes the Curriculum Well-Organised

Curriculum bases offer a structured framework for preparing learning materials. They assist in the rational planning of the subjects, topics and learning experiences.

This organisation ensures that it has a good teaching and learning process, reduces confusion and turns the curriculum into a methodical and significant process which teachers and students can follow with ease.

2. Ensures Relevance to Learners and Society

The education foundations are the assurance that education is not an innocent one but one related to the needs of life. They take into account the interests of learners and the demands of society.

This renders learning practical and applicable to the students as they can apply knowledge in everyday life. It also equips them with skills on how to be productive in society and to adjust to the fluctuating social conditions.

3. Promotes Holistic Education

The curriculum helps to carry through the overall development of the students in terms of intellectual, emotional, social and physical development. They not only develop their academic education but also their character, values and life skills.

This ensures that the students are not merely one-sided individuals who can be capable of tackling the problems put forward in the real world in a responsible and confident way.

4. Set Clear Objectives

Curriculum-based help sets achievable and explicit objectives of education. They assist educators in designing the lessons as well as assessing student achievement.

With such clear goals, the teaching process becomes goal-focused and purposeful as well as the students are aware of what to expect and can achieve the desired learning outcomes with effectiveness and in a systematic manner.

5. Encourages Updated Content

The curriculum is based on the principles which promote absorption of contemporary and pertinent knowledge. They ensure that the new trends, technologies and discoveries are reiterated in the old information.

This renders dynamic education
, interesting and in touch with the global developments and keeps the students on their feet and highly competitive in the challenges that they may be facing in future.

6. Equity and Standardisation

Curriculum bases ensure equality and homogeneity of education. They offer equality in education
, irrespective of any background, to all the students.

Standardised guidelines help in uniformity in the schools and institutions, and all learners receive quality education
without any discrimination and inequality.

6 Challenges in Applying the Bases of Curriculum

Implementation of the foundations of curriculum problems is a lack of balancing of factors, resources, changes and needs of various learners. The challenges in applying the basics of the curriculum are as follows.

1. Difficulty in Balancing Different Bases

One of the largest issues is tension among the philosophical, psychological, sociological and other bases of the curriculum.

They all have their significance and requirements, and it is hard to combine them on the same level.

This may result in inefficiency in the curriculum and can lead to confusion in making the correct selection of the content and instructional method to be applied by the learners.

2. Rapid Changes in Society and Technology

The society is dynamic, and technological changes also face difficulties in revising the curriculum.

Consequently, this can make the curriculum quite obsolete in a very small time, making it less relevant and useful in equipping students to meet the current demands as well as in meeting their future demands.

3. Diverse Learning Need

Students have different abilities, interests and styles of learning
, thus making planning of the curriculum difficult. It is not simple to develop a curriculum which will satisfy everyone.

The curriculum is not that flexible, and it needs to change strategies and material to meet the heterogeneous requirements, and in most instances, it leaves gaps in the learning
process and student engagement
.

4. Limited Resources and Infrastructure

In most schools, the facilities, teaching
resources and technology are not available to facilitate curriculum based.

Lack of appropriate resources makes it hard to implement the use of modern teaching techniques or equitable provision of education, thus resulting in poor learning and less efficacy of the curriculum.

5. Resistance to Curriculum Change

The teachers, institutions or even communities may oppose change in the curriculum due to the old traditions or fear of novelties.

This opposition is a hindrance to implementation and innovation. This has led to a predisposition that the implementation of new and more designed curriculum designs cannot be implemented immediately or more effectively in the classroom setup.

6. Lack of Professionals

It requires the assistance of competent professionals to develop a curriculum. Nevertheless, in the majority of the institutions, the number of qualified specialists is lacking.

The result of this deficiency is poorly designed curricula which fail to take into account all bases and lower the overall effectiveness and quality of the education systems.

Bases of Curriculum in Indian Education

1. Influence of NCERT

NCERT plays a massive role in developing the Indian curriculum
by developing textbooks, instructions and an education framework. It guarantees standardisation and quality in school education in the entire country.

The child-centred, activity-based learning
, and conceptual modes of learning
have been encouraged by NCERT; it will help in enhancing the correspondence between the curriculum and national education goals and the prevailing trends in instruction.

2. Influence of NEP 2020

The National Education Policy 2020
has had an incredible impact on the curriculum design in India. It emphasises multidisciplinary, flexible learning
and holistic learning
.

NEP 2020 is founded on the development of skills, critical thinking and experience. It encourages learning in the native language, it lessens the content in the curriculum, and it introduces technology that enables learning to be more current and future-focused.

3. Influence of NCF

The National Curriculum Framework (NCF)
is a statutory/policy framework used to give recommendations for designing school curricula in India. It makes education learner-centred, inclusive and activity-centred. NCF is values-oriented, creative and conceptually oriented.

It will assist schools in producing a curriculum that can attract what the country would achieve, and in addition, address the needs of the learners in various fields.

Conclusion

The foundations of curriculum play a significant role in coming up with a quality education that is meaningful. They provide a strong foundation on which the decisions as to what the students will learn, how they will learn and why they have to learn are determined.
Education will become more balanced, relevant and student-centred with the mixture of philosophical, psychological, sociological and other foundations. These foundations also make sure that the improvement of teaching practices and curriculum development is continuously enhanced.

Have you ever wondered what influence the bases of curriculum have on student development?
