“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

And ………….

Education systems are very important in determining a child’s destiny for future when it comes to academic advancement and parents have the difficult task of choosing a curriculum for them, and before that they analyse situations best suited for their future, keeping all aspects in mind; their pace, their need, their future goals and even their lifestyle.

And there are many advantages of the Indian education system internationally.

There are many programmes to choose from of which the two most prominent are International Baccalaureate and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, commonly known as IB and ICSE

To assist the parents in their decision making process this article focuses clearly on comparing the two said curricula.

The ICSE is often compared to the IGCSE, on the other hand IB is compared to A Levels. ICSE and IGCSE are compared on the basis of which exams prepare you better.

An often asked question when comparing academic structure includes one of the other most known curriculum i.e : A levels and IB is something that it is often compared with.

What is IB (International Baccalaureate)

As the traditional Indian market is not very used to these globally recognised curriculums, there is a very small proportion of the audience that actually know the existence and the value it holds as a curriculum.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognized educational framework, said to be developed in Switzerland in 1968

It is no other than any other curriculum, it’s dedicated to students but it helps learners to grow into all rounders who are well equipped with all the survival skills and mainly focus on intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills; that most of the traditional curriculum pre-existing in india didn’t used to look at.

So, what makes IB different:

IB is not something very different, certainly there are some features that make it stand out of the crowd when it comes to academic and personal development , especially when opting for higher studies: the key features to this curriculum includes

  • Global Perspective
  • Inquiry-Based Learning
  • Holistic Education
  • Multilingualism

All these features provide learners with curiosity and it encourages critical thinking, mainly helps in balancing between personal and academic achievements.

Being a part of the globally acceptable curriculum it encourages extracurricular activities providing students with the confidence needed to face the world after the schooling ends; the college life.

“A child’s mind is not a container to be filled but rather a fire to be kindled.”

And so is the IB’s focus on critical thinking and inquiry. It is designed in a way that nobody can miss on any skill. A student enrolled with this curriculum will be prepared to challenge the rapidly changing dynamics of the world and keep up with it.

One of the most important question here is :

How structured is the IB Curriculum Framework?

The IB curriculum is structured across four programs, catering to the needs in every age group based on the changes going across the globe and even sticking to the needs of the students:

  1. Primary Years Programme (PYP)
    1. For students aged 3-12
    2. focusing on inquiry-based learning.
  2. Middle Years Programme (MYP)
    1. For students aged 11-16
    2. bridging foundational knowledge with skill development.
  3. Diploma Programme (DP)
    1. For students aged 16-19
    2. offering in-depth study across six subject groups.
  4. Career-Related Programme (CP)
    1. Focuses on career-oriented education for older students.

How is ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) different?

The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) is purely an examination-based curriculum overseen by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).

Established in 1958, ICSE puts a lot of focus on comprehensive learning and practical applications of knowledge. Which is obviously very similar to all other curriculums that look up to holistic development.

But, ICSE makes students ready for Indian colleges and considering the course structure and framework, it is well suited for learners who look forward to more academic achievement rather than development based on skills and creativity.

And like every other curriculum that has ever existed,

ICSE also has some features that make it stand differently from all others in the same list.

Key Features of ICSE include :

  • Wide Subject Range
  • Balanced Curriculum
  • Strong Language Focus
  • Practical Knowledge

“The goal of education is the advancement of knowledge and the dissemination of truth.”

Just as John F. Kenedy said; similarly this curriculum has more to do with knowledge and factual education than skill based learning.

The features don’t restrict themselves here in ICSE but it mainly focuses on academics projecting structured learning rather than experimental understanding of new skills.

It strongly focuses on English as a language focused on strongly; both written and verbal to a level that no other curriculum compares, and along with that it  includes a long list of subjects quite much similar to that of CBSE.

The educational framework is also very similar to the CBSE curriculum.

“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” and that is how the curriculum is designed, step by step but in a way that it becomes a lifestyle for learners to evolve into.

ICSE Curriculum Framework

ICSE Curriculum Framework had three major levels starting from foundational learning that grows into a more complex level building concepts to finally being accessed by a standard method of exams for diverse subjects under boards, namely :

  • Primary Level
  • Middle Level
  • High School Level

Similarities Between IB and ICSE

Does similarity really matter ?

And, how similar are these?

When compared Both of these academic curricula focus on the holistic developments of students and ensure that every student there excels academically and grows into an all-rounder even when it comes to active participation and extra curricular activities; ultimately leading the directions towards holistic development.

And honestly, there is no better knowledge than something that makes you a better human being.

As time passes by, it is important for every student to develop an amazing set of skills that help children with their problem solving and critical thinking.

And these skills ultimately make them more creative and open to situations, improving their analytical and problem solving skills.

All this analysis leaves us no-where in comparison, until a decision is made.

Decision worth a lifetime!

Which is Better: IB or ICSE?

How should one choose?

And what should be the factors that affect the decision making?

Honestly,  Choosing between IB and ICSE depends on the child’s aspirations and parents’ preferences.

But the factors to Consider range from long term benefits to learning style or may in some cases include financial constraints that actually may end up being one the major factors that help in decision making.

But, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

IB favours self learners and makes you into an individual who can survive any situation and deal with any problem as and when needed, mainly real-life problems.

ICSE, whereas is a structured learning process, and is less costlier than IB. It is mostly an international advantage with Indian education.

Conclusion

When it comes to selection Parents should consider factors such as curriculum focus, cost, and career aspirations before making a decision.

While IB nurtures global citizens, ICSE offers a solid academic foundation for success in India and abroad.
