The first stage of the admission process is Class 12 eligibility and JEE Main, and the second stage is JEE Advanced, whose eligibility requirements are Class 12.

Another benefit is that students are able to fulfil the rank and other admission requirements of their course of choice as well as IIT.

These are the pre-knowledge
requirements, which therefore assist the students to be prepared for their studies, the way the selection is done and how to make an informed decision on counselling and seat assignment.

What Are IITs?

Indian Institutes of Technology, also known as IITs, are well-known centres of higher education
in India that have been renowned in the fields of engineering, technology, science and research.

They have courses like BTech, MTech, MSc, MBA and PhD in various disciplines. IITs are believed to possess good academic courses, faculty, research and a good admission process.

Interested students who have the desire to be enrolled in undergraduate engineering programmes usually need to qualify in JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Another benefit offered by IITs is that students have been able to acquire skills in technical, problem-solving
, and research.

What is IIT Admission Criteria?

The admission requirements of IIT, BTech as well as other undergraduate programmes include the requirements of JEE Main, JEE Advanced, Class 12 subjects and marks, age and attempts.

The rules might not be the same as that of the dot, i.e. year of admission; a candidate will be recommended to refer to the official information brochure of JEE Advanced to get the year.

1. Entrance Exams

IIT BTech programmes are based on admission by JEE Advanced. The students need to successfully clear JEE Main Paper 1 (BE/BTech) to be allowed to take JEE Advanced, and satisfy JEE Main requirements.

The exam may be taken by the applicants based on the eligibility criteria of JEE Advanced. Based on the rank, category, preferences and availability of seats, JEE Advanced, post-selection, assigns seats based on the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

2. Academic Qualification – Class 12 Requirement

To qualify for B Tech, students must have completed Class 12/equivalent examination and the following are mandatory: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM).

In case of in-service students and those in other classes who will be in Class 12 in the current year of admission, they can also apply on the condition that the requirements are fulfilled as stated in the JEE Advanced information brochure.

This may also take several years to be imparted to individuals who already pass Class 12 next year.

3. Class 12 Marks Requirement for IIT Admission

Have a combined mark of 75% in Class 12 or equivalent examination
. In most instances, the 65% aggregate marks are the minimum requirement in case of SC, ST and PwD candidates.

The mark requirements are subject to the regulations of the year of admission at that time, and the students must make sure to check the relevant brochure before doing so.

4. Minimum Marks

The 75/65% cannot be compared with the lowest score in the JEE Advanced. The candidates will also have to possess the required marks in the JEE Advanced in order to feature in the rank list.

JEE Advanced has subject-level and aggregate-level qualifying marks and is announced on the date of each examination.

It is not a guarantee to get into IIT once Class 12 qualification is attained. It also requires JEE Advanced rank, category, programme preferences and availability of seats to be able to get admission.

5. Age Limit

In JEE Advanced, applicants must fulfil the date-of-birth requirement as stated in the year of the test. The rules of the JEE Advanced 2026 include one, comprising a set of cutoff dates based on birth date.

As the age requirement changes every year, the applicants should refer to the joint information brochure of JEE Advanced and not be misdirected by a fixed age requirement of a past year.

6. Number of Attempts

A candidate was allowed to attend JEE Advanced in two sittings of two consecutive years as a rule. The attempt rule is determined based on the qualification of the candidate and his/her performance in JEE Advanced.

Students are also to keep in mind the rules of attempts and eligibility of JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

That is why it will not allow the candidates to ignore the right provisions of the year in which they plan to take their exam attempts.

IIT Eligibility Percentage

IIT BTech admission typically demands performance in Class 12 of JEE Advanced for applicants.

They should be able to obtain not less than 75% of aggregate marks in Class 12, or they should be in the 20th percentile of the successful candidates in their respective boards. The lowest overall in cases of SC, ST and PwD would be 65%.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

The students who appear in the JEE Main Paper 1 (BE/BTech) should have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination or should be taking the qualifying examination in the years allowed.

In the case of BTech, the mandatory ones are Physics and Mathematics and either Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a vocation of a technical nature.

There is no age limit on taking JEE Main, although certain institutions may have their own age limit regarding their admissions.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria

In order to feature in JEE Advanced, he/she must have passed JEE Main and be ranked among the 2,50,000 successful candidates in category-wise distributions in the first paper of the JEE Main.

The candidates also need to be in conformity with the provisions of Class 12, age limit, number of attempts and other provisions in that year.

To enrol in IIT, one has to pass JEE Advanced, which does not ensure admission. JoSAA counselling will involve ranking and categorising the candidate, and subsequently he may be admitted to the school of the programme of his choice on the available seats.

IIT Admission Criteria for Different Categories

All candidates undergo the basic IIT admission process, though there are category-based principles which determine the reservation, qualifying marks, rank lists and seat allotment.

In the case of JEE Advanced 2026, the types of basic reservations are GEN, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST. It is also the category which defines the minimum marks needed to be listed in the JEE Advanced rank list.

The total qualifying requirement in 2026 is 25.56% for the Common Rank List, 22.78% for OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS and 12.78% for SC and ST. These are the percentages
of JEE Advanced 2026, and these may vary on an annual basis.

Category

Qualifying Requirement

Common Rank List (GEN)

25.56%

OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS

22.78%

SC/ST

12.78%

IIT Admission Criteria: Step-by-step Process

The IIT admission is conducted in a series of events such as eligibility information, attendance at the entrance test, counselling, seat allotment, verifying documents and finally, admission.

Step 1: Meet Eligibility Criteria

Age should be at least 18 years, and you should have the desired Class 12 subjects and marks and other qualifications. Make sure that you meet the requirements specified in JEE Main and JEE Advanced for the respective year of admission.

Step 2: Appear for JEE Main

Write and complete the test of JEE Main Paper 1 (BE/BTech). The performance in your JEE Main determines whether or not you can be eligible for the JEE Advanced selection pool.

Step 3: Qualify for JEE Advanced

Candidates having the overall eligibility as mentioned in the JEE Advanced and JEE Main category-wise cutoff/rank-range are eligible to take JEE Advanced.

Step 4: Take JEE Advanced Exam

Pass in JEE Advanced and meet the target of the qualifying marks (subject and aggregate) to feature in the rank list. Another critical factor in the IIT seat allotment is its final rank.

Step 5: JoSAA Counselling & Choice Filling

Go to JoSAA counselling on completion of JEE Advanced. Prior to the stipulated deadline, fill out and rank your desired IITs, courses and programmes as per your preference.

Step 6: Seat Allotment & Document Verification

JoSAA will use your JEE Advanced Marks, category and choices to assign you a seat. After being assigned a seat, pay the necessary fee and verify the documents within the necessary time.

Step 7: Final Admission & Reporting

Once you receive the assigned seat and complete the necessary formalities, abide by the guidelines of the assigned IIT. Submit any pending documents, meet the requirements of admission and check in to the institute as necessary.

List of Top IIT Colleges in India

India possesses seats.

Step 1: Register for JoSAA

The deserving candidates are registered in the official JoSAA portal using their JEE qualifications. They are supposed to submit their required information and complete registration within the required time.

Step 2: Fill and Lock time.

Step 3: Seat Allocation

JoSAA conducts a series of counselling rounds and assigns seats based on rank, category, preference of choice and availability.

Step 4: Accept the Allotted Seat

Those who are offered a seat are allowed to choose the Not Checking Eligibility Criteria Properly

Students must ensure that they have the latest eligibility criteria and that they have fulfilled them fully prior to the application.

The subjects, importance of marks, age, entrance exam, and other provisions have to be verified; otherwise, the subject will not be in a position to receive admission and enrol.

2. Missing Important Deadlines

JEE applications, examinations, counselling, choice filling, paying of fees and document verification are some of the major IIT admission dates.

Candidates can miss the opportunity to take an exam or even take a seat due to a missed deadline.

3. Incorrect Category Selection

This is to be filled in the application and counselling forms, and a student must select their category correctly.

They should have a copy of authentic documents to prove their classification as well. False information or certificates may also cancel the admission reservation benefits during the admission process.

4. Poor Choice Filling in JoSAA

Students are suggested to make IIT and course choices as per their interests, rank, and preferences. The lack of proper planning in the filling may result in an undesirable path or institute in the process of assigning seats.

5. Ignoring Mock Counselling

The simulated counselling will assist the students to gain a bit of information about the JoSAA filling, choice-allocation, and seat-allocation process. The results will enable the students to check their preferences, choose better and eliminate errors prior to the actual counselling rounds.

5 Alternative Routes if You Don’t Get IIT

Rejection by an IIT does not mean you end your engineering possibilities. Through JEE Main or state entrance examinations, or admission procedures that take place at the university level, students will be able to join other good institutes.

1. NITs (via JEE Main)

Nationally funded technical institutions that offer BTech programmes in computer science, mechanical, electrical, civil and electronics engineering amongst others are known as National Institutes of Technology (NITs).

Entry to NITs largely depends on performance in JEE Main, after which there is JoSAA counselling. Based on their rank, category and the number of seats, students are allowed to choose their desired NIT and branch.

NIT Trichy, NIT Rourkela, NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal, NIT Calicut and NIT Allahabad are some of the popular NITs.

2. GFTIs

Government-Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs) are a number of government-backed institutions that provide engineering and technology programmes.

Many participating institutes take admission either through JEE Main and JoSAA counselling, but the requirements may vary according to the institute.

Famous institutions include Assam University, Tezpur University, University of Hyderabad, Pondicherry University, Harcourt Butler Technical University and Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology.

3. State Engineering Colleges

State engineering colleges also offer another alternative that could be given to students who fail to acquire an IIT seat. This may be through admission based on JEE Main, state-level entrance tests or state counselling, depending on the state and the institution.

Others that are famous are Jadavpur University, Delhi Technological University (DTU), Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT), College of Engineering Pune (COEP Technological University) and Anna University.

4. Private Universities

The majority of the popular majors of computer science, artificial intelligence, electronics, mechanical engineering and biotechnology are provided at privately operated universities as BTech.

Admission can be done on the basis of JEE Main scores, a university entrance exam, on a merit basis or any other process as specified by the university.

Popular choices include VIT Vellore, BITS Pilani, Manipal Institute of Technology, SRM Institute of Science and Technology and Shiv Nadar University.

Conclusion

The IIT admission entails a set of both academic and entrance exam qualifications for students before undergoing counselling and allotment of seats. It is done based on the JEE Main, the JEE Advanced, Class 12 marks, category, rank and choice of course.

To prevent mistakes and gain better chances to get admission, students are to monitor the recent eligibility regulations, gather necessary documents, observe significant deadlines, and make wise decisions at JoSAA counselling.

Admission to an IIT will involve a series of academic and entrance exams before one is admitted.
