What English Mastery develops

English is more than grammar exercises or reading passages.

The pathway can include reading and comprehension, vocabulary and language use, grammar, writing, speaking and communication, critical thinking, analysis, interpretation and creative expression. The emphasis is on understanding meaning, organising ideas and communicating purposefully.

A skills-first starting point

Every learner completes a diagnostic after registration and before placement.

The diagnostic identifies current strengths and areas that need attention. A learner may be advanced in reading but require support with writing structure, or speak confidently while needing greater grammatical accuracy. Placement responds to this profile rather than assigning one label based only on age or grade.

How live learning works

Sessions require learners to read, question, discuss, write and reflect.

Facilitators may use fiction and non-fiction texts, comprehension tasks, vocabulary work, grammar in context, structured writing, presentations and creative activities. AI-assisted personalised practice and adaptive progression support targeted practice between or within live learning.

Feedback helps learners understand both what is working and what to improve. The aim is not simply to complete an exercise but to apply the skill in a new context.

Curriculum by age band

The curriculum develops the same connected English capabilities at increasing levels of complexity and independence.

  • Elementary

    Ages 6–8

Learners build phonics and decoding, word recognition, reading fluency, sentence construction, listening and confident speaking. As they progress, they sequence ideas, write connected paragraphs and stories, ask and answer questions, and take part in guided discussion. Learning may culminate in a structured storybook or narrative project.

  • Intermediate

    Ages 9–11

Learners move into closer reading and text analysis, structured narrative, expository and persuasive writing, presentations and debate. They learn to identify main ideas, examine character and theme, compare perspectives, organise arguments and support ideas with evidence. Outcomes may include a persuasive essay or thematic project.

  • Advanced

    Ages 12–13

Learners work with increasingly demanding literature and non-fiction, analytical essays, research and synthesis, rhetorical techniques, persuasive speeches and formal discussion. They may evaluate arguments, develop a thesis, combine evidence from different sources and communicate for a defined audience through a research paper, formal speech or extended presentation.

Explorer, Navigator and Pioneer tiers adjust the support, complexity and independence expected within each age band. Placement remains diagnostic-led, and learners can show different strengths across reading, writing, speaking and language use.

Progression

Learners move forward when they can demonstrate the required understanding.

Evidence may include reading responses, writing samples, oral communication, application tasks, formative assessments, reflection and facilitator observations. Progression is flexible but rigorous: learners may spend longer consolidating one domain while moving more quickly in another.

Who it can support

English Mastery is designed for ages 6–13 with different starting points.

It can support learners who find particular skills difficult, learners seeking deeper understanding and learners ready for work beyond their current school level. Suitability for first-language and additional-language learners depends on the programme’s placement decision. Learners whose primary need is general English acquisition may be better served by ESOL.

Visible progress

Parents should see specific evidence rather than broad claims.

Useful evidence includes before-and-after writing samples, comprehension performance, vocabulary application, learner reflection and facilitator feedback.

Questions parents ask

Practical answers about English Mastery.

Can my child work above school grade?

Yes, where diagnostic evidence and ongoing readiness support more advanced work.

Is English Mastery the same as ESOL?

No. English Mastery is a skills-first subject pathway. ESOL is designed for general English-language proficiency.
