CBSE New Assessment Framework

The CBSE board has made a fundamental change in its education system in recent years. CBSE board has changed their assessment system and made a new assessment framework.

This change has been made in accordance with the instructions of the National Education Policy 2020.

The main aim of this new assessment system is to make students practically skilled. This new system has made students more interested because students have become more practically oriented.

In this article, students will know about the CBSE new assessment system and the difference from the old system.

What is the CBSE New Assessment Framework?

CBSE New Assessment Framework refers to the new assessment or education system of CBSE. It has made some changes to its old examination system and introduced a new system.

In the old assessment system, emphasis was placed on the student’s abstract knowledge, but through the new assessment education system, students are taught in real situations. This system increases the skills of students.

7 Key Features of the CBSE New Assessment Framework

The CBSE board has changed the evaluation method for students, especially to increase the skills of the students.

In this system, education is not only exam-oriented but also gives special importance to the thinking and skills of the student. Some important features are discussed below.

1. Competency-Based Education (CBE)

Competency-based education (CBE) is an outcome-based approach to education to ensure proficiency in learning by students through demonstration of the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes required for dealing with real-life situations at the age- and grade-appropriate level.

Competency-based education encourages students to think independently. Here, learners acquire special abilities in problem-solving, reasoning, and decision-making. As a result, students are prepared for exams and higher education and the workplace.

2. Dedicated Assessment System

The new CBSE assessment system evaluates learning progress throughout the year. Periodic tests, project work, practical activities, assignments and classroom participation are covered.

It considers the intellectual, social and emotional development of the student together. As a result, a student’s future does not depend on a single exam. It helps students develop a habit of regular study.

3. Flexible Learning with Multiple Opportunities

The CBSE framework comes with flexibility. The board offers multiple exam options to attend. For example, if a student underperforms in the first attempt, they are offered another chance to improve their marks in upcoming exams. Students can prepare for the exam at their own pace.

4. Specialised Assessments

According to the new assessment framework, skills are assessed separately, called Specialised Assessment. It gives equal importance to practical work, skill-based activities, oral assessment and project evaluation.

Hence, it is possible to assess creativity, communication skills, and technical skills. Skill Subjects and Vocational Education help students develop work-oriented skills.

5. Balanced Question Paper Structure

CBSE structures question papers for students to get equal opportunity at scoring.

The question paper has about 50% competency-based questions, 20% objective or MCQ questions, and 30% short and long answer questions.

This balanced structure assesses different types of learning skills of students and makes the exam fairer. It helps students write long answers as well as think analytically and quickly.

6. Technology-Driven Evaluation

The use of technology in the CBSE evaluation system is increasing rapidly. Digital answer sheet evaluation, on-screen marking system and automated result processing are being introduced.

The use of technology increases transparency and accuracy in evaluation, and results are declared faster. Human errors are reduced, and the quality of evaluation remains consistent.

7. Language Policy and Multilingualism

The new assessment framework emphasises linguistic diversity. Multilingual Education is being encouraged based on the idea that students understand concepts faster when they have the opportunity to learn in their mother tongue or regional language.

Opportunities to learn in different languages help students maintain their cultural identity. In addition, multilingual skills play an important role in future higher education and global communication.

Class-Wise Implementation of CBSE New Assessment Framework

1. Classes 9–10 Assessment Framework

Class 9 and 10 students are encouraged to develop concept-based learning by reducing their dependence on memorisation.

The number of competency-based, application-based questions in the question paper has been increased so that students learn to answer with real-life examples.

Internal Assessment such as Periodic Test, Project Work, Practical Activity and Subject Enrichment Activities now play a very important role.

At this stage, emphasis is placed on developing students’ analytical skills, problem-solving skills and logical thinking.

Interest-based learning of students is being encouraged by including Skill Subjects and vocational learning.

A continuous assessment system helps students develop the habit of studying regularly and reduces the extra pressure on one-time exams.

2. Classes 11–12 Assessment Changes

At classes 11 and 12, learning through Internal Assessment, Practical Examination, Research-based Project and Investigative Learning has gained importance, especially in Science, Commerce and Humanities streams.

Case Study, Data Interpretation and Assertion-Reason type questions have been included more to develop higher-order thinking skills.

CBSE emphasises independent learning, research and acquisition of subject-specific skills by students at this level.

CBSE New Assessment Framework- New Question Paper Design Explained

CBSE’s new assessment framework introduces some systems that are discussed below.

1. Competency-Based Questions (50%)

The new CBSE question paper has about 50% competency-based questions, which is the mainstay of this assessment framework. These types of questions help students’ understanding of the subject rather than just memorising information.

Case Studies, Source-Based Questions, Data Interpretation and Application-Based Problems are included in this section. Students are required to analyse real-world situations and give reasonable answers.

These questions help students develop problem-solving and analytical skills.

2. Objective Questions (20%)

MCQ questions assess the accuracy, time management and conceptual clarity of the students. Objective questions are usually short, but it is difficult to give correct answers if the concept is not clear.

These questions test the ability to think quickly and the basic understanding of the subject.

Assertion-Reason, Match the Following, and One-word Answer type questions may also be present in this section.

This section enhances the students’ quick decision-making skills and increases their confidence during the exam.

3. Constructed Response Questions (30%)

CBSE board has kept constructed response questions at 30% in the new assessment system. These questions are short and long answer questions. Through these, the writing skills of the student are increased, and deep knowledge about the subject can be understood.

Integration of NEP 2020 Vision in the CBSE New Assessment Framework

The CBSE New Assessment Framework has been developed in full compliance with the objectives and pedagogy of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020).

The main objective of NEP 2020 is to move education from being solely based on tests to being based on skills, creativity and real-life learning.

CBSE has introduced competency-based learning in the assessment system where students are assessed on their ability to understand concepts and apply knowledge.

In addition, the concept of flexible subject choice and multidisciplinary learning is also part of this framework, which gives students the opportunity to learn according to their interests.

Reducing exam pressure, providing multiple exam opportunities and strengthening internal assessment are reflections of NEP’s student-friendly education policy.
