Recently, the CBSE Board has released instructions for Class 12 learners who are going to give compartment practical exams.

Many learners who have either failed in the practicals or in both the practical and theory will reappear in the practical compartment exams of 2026.

Ensure seamless registration in the practical compartment exams with the help of the following article. This clearly states all the guidelines related to venue, dates, necessary documents, and further actions needed by students and teachers to efficiently finish the exams.

CBSE Class 12 Practical Exams in the Compartment Category

The Central Board of Secondary Education gives learners the option to clear their practical exams in the compartment category if they were absent or failed to get passing marks.

Students who want to pass in one attempt can refer to: How to prepare for CBSE Class 12 practical exams.

Learners who couldn’t attain passing marks in both theory and practicals are also eligible to give compartment practical exams. The dates for conducting compartment exams and when CBSE compartment results will be declared in 2026 have already been released.

But before deciding to appear for the compartment exams for practicals, learners should check their final results.

CBSE Practical Exam Guidelines for Class 12 Students in Compartment Category

CBSE has given a few important directions that school and students are required to follow in the supplementary practical exams.

A few of the main guidelines are:

  • The conduction of the practical examination shall be strictly in accordance with the CBSE schedule.
  • During the examination, only the practical answer books issued by the Regional offices can be used, and examiners should ensure that all necessary entries are filled properly.
  • External examiners should be appointed by the Regional offices. Internal examiners should be among the teachers of the school and decided by the schools.
  • The practical examination process should be fair, transparent and confidential.
  • On the exam day, students are expected to bring all the documents they need.
  • For practical marks, the schools will have to upload the results on the CBSE portal on the same day of the exam. These marks are final and shall not be changed further.

Here’s how to check practical marks in CBSE.

  • Learners should arrive at the examination site at the designated arrival time and date.
  • Attendance records and Practical assessment records should be maintained by the school as per the CBSE requirements.
  • Schools cannot conduct the practical exams in the compartment category of Class 12 independently, under any circumstances.

Students are encouraged to keep in constant touch with their school management, as any information about practical examinations is normally conveyed via the school. Make sure to contact your school on 27th July, 2026 to avoid eleventh-hour muddle.

But first, know how to fill the compartment form for CBSE Class 12.

What are Essential Documents for Class 12 Compartment Exams?

The essential documents for Class 12 compartment exams are a valid government-approved photo ID, a photocopy of your last results certificate or marksheet that states your repeat in practical (RP), and your compartment admit card that clearly mentions your details.

Before entering the school or authorised centre for conducting practical exams for Class 12 in the compartment category, learners need to carry these necessary documents with them. Otherwise, their entry will be denied, and they will be restrained from giving their practical compartment exams.

Who Needs to Appear for the Practical Examination?

Mostly, practicals are conducted before the final examinations. But some learners fail either in practicals and theory both, or in practicals alone. These learners have to reappear for practical exams as per the CBSE Examination Bye-Laws.

The two categories of students who have to appear in practical exams under the compartment category are:

  • Learners who have been placed in the Compartment category due to a Repeat in Practical (RP) in one subject or more.
  • Learners placed in the Compartment category due to Repeat in Theory and Practical Both (RB) in any subject(s).

If you have got passing marks in your practicals but are in the compartment category, you might have to reappear for your theory exams only.

Many learners who have passed their theory exams only have to repeat practical exams under the compartment exams. They will take supplementary exams instead of repeating their theory exams too.

For this, you will have to refer to your final results marksheet of Class 12 and apply for practical exams under the Compartment category if required.

Dates for Conducting Practical Examinations

This year, the designated dates for compartment practical examinations are decided to be from 29th July, 2026 to 4th August, 2026. You must check the official website and remain in constant contact with your school for any updates. Dates are decided by the CBSE board for conducting practical examinations for compartment students. Every year, CBSE takes this responsibility and adheres to it.

Venue for Conducting Practical Examinations

The venue for the practical examinations is entirely dependent on the student’s status. If you are a regular learner, your exam centre will automatically be your school. For private candidates in CBSE, their previous theory exam centre will most likely be the venue for giving practical supplementary examinations.

If there are any changes in the final examination location, the needful changes will be managed by the regional offices and students shall be informed within the designated date.

Conclusion

If you are going to give the CBSE practicals under Supplementary exams, you need to remember all the guidelines and follow them strictly. Even schools and Regional offices should abide by them.

These guidelines are necessary for the smooth conduct of Class 12 practical exams under the compartment category. Learners and parents feel confident when the venue, dates, and other information regarding the compartment practical exams are already made available by the CBSE and the affiliate schools.

Make sure that you regularly visit the official website of CBSE to stay updated. Ask your school officials if there will be any further changes in the exam conducted 48 hours before appearing in the final compartment practical exams.
