Families can choose Arabic, French, Japanese, Spanish or ESOL.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) supports learners developing English proficiency. It is primarily a communicative English course. IELTS is a separate Grades 9–12 exam-preparation offer within Mastery and should not be confused with ESOL or a general language programme.

Learning for real communication

The goal is progressive capability across listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Beginners build high-frequency vocabulary, pronunciation, greetings, familiar exchanges and early literacy. Continuing learners work towards richer comprehension, more accurate language structures and increasingly independent communication. As proficiency develops, learners may describe people and routines, navigate everyday situations, discuss culture and society, interpret stories and authentic texts, and create presentations or projects in the language.

How classes work

Core learning takes place in small, live online cohorts.

Facilitators use conversation, audio, reading, writing, role play, stories, presentations, projects and structured practice. Cultural exploration is integrated through authentic resources and age-appropriate contexts rather than treated as an occasional add-on. Digital resources, worksheets and recorded learning resources reinforce the live programme.

The language portfolio uses an internal level-wise framework; there is no single universal external scale across every language. Selected pathways may support preparation towards DELF in French, DELE in Spanish, JLPT in Japanese or Cambridge IGCSE where the relevant language, level and cohort are formally approved. This does not guarantee examination entry, an external certificate or a particular result.

ESOL

ESOL is for learners who need structured support in using English confidently.

The programme develops practical English across listening, speaking, reading and writing, supported by vocabulary and grammar in context. Learners practise understanding spoken English, joining conversations, reading different text types and organising ideas clearly in writing. Placement considers school grade, prior exposure and current proficiency, with a diagnostic where required. ESOL develops general English use rather than preparing learners for a specific external examination.
