Care when a learner needs it

Children learn best when they feel safe, known and supported. 21K School, Puducherry plans an on-campus infirmary staffed by a full-time qualified nurse. The infirmary will provide an appropriate place for first aid, initial assessment, short-term observation and communication with families when a learner becomes unwell or is injured during the school day.

The school also plans a tie-up with a local hospital for emergencies. The nurse and authorised staff will follow defined escalation procedures according to the situation, the information available and the learner’s registered health details. Families will be contacted as soon as reasonably possible when further medical attention or collection is required.

Information that helps us respond well

Parents and guardians will be expected to provide accurate and current information about allergies, medical conditions, medication, emergency contacts and any relevant care instructions. Updates should be shared promptly whenever a learner’s health needs change.

The school will establish procedures for medicines that must be administered during school hours. Medication should not be sent informally with a child. Families will receive guidance on authorisation, original packaging, dosage instructions, storage and handover to the nurse or designated staff.

Wellbeing is more than first aid

Learner wellbeing includes emotional security, healthy relationships, confidence, belonging and the ability to seek help. Facilitators and school leaders will pay attention to changes in participation, behaviour or engagement, while recognising that teachers do not replace clinical professionals.

Online counsellors and specialists are planned as part of the wider support system. Where a concern requires specialist attention, the school may discuss suitable next steps with the family. The nature and frequency of support will depend on the learner’s needs, informed consent, professional recommendations and the school’s available capacity.

A culture of care and partnership

Age-appropriate routines around hydration, hygiene, movement, rest and help-seeking will form part of campus life. Medical and wellbeing support works best as a partnership: the school provides observation and response during the school day, while families share relevant information and arrange ongoing diagnosis or treatment through appropriate healthcare professionals.

Individual educational or wellbeing support needs will be considered with care. Decisions will be based on the child’s needs, the learning context, professional information where relevant and the school’s capacity to provide safe and appropriate support.
