Our Learner Council

21K School Learner Council 2026–27

Leadership doesn't begin when you grow up, it begins when someone believes you are ready to lead.

Learners should not have to wait until adulthood to discover their voice.

They should have opportunities to speak up. Make choices. Listen to perspectives different from their own. Take responsibility. Represent others. Make decisions. And understand that leadership is not about a title—it is about what you choose to do with the trust placed in you.

The 21K School Learner Council is where that journey begins.

And in 2026–27, for the first time, that journey began even earlier with the introduction of our Primary Learner Council.

For the First Time, Leadership Begins in Primary

Over years of observing our young learners, we recognise that confidence, responsibility and agency are built from the early years.

This year marked an important milestone at 21K School: the introduction of our first Primary Learner Council.

Rather than simply adapting an older learner election for younger children, the experience was intentionally redesigned around their age and stage of development.

Before learners were even introduced to elections, Grades 3–5 participated in classroom democratic simulations like discussions, polls, majority voting and activities designed to help them experience voice and choice first-hand.

The intention was simple:

Don't just teach children what democracy means, let them experience it.

More Than an Election

We weren't looking only for winners. We were creating leaders.

The Learner Council journey was deliberately designed to go far beyond nominations and voting.

Learners explored what it means to represent others, communicate an idea, disagree respectfully, make ethical decisions, collaborate with a team and take ownership of responsibility.

The Journey

01 — Discover

Experience democracy, voice, choice and decision-making.

02 — Step Forward

Put yourself forward with a leadership vision, personal goals, motivation and manifesto.

03 — Listen & Discuss

Participate in group discussions around real issues relevant to learners.

04 — Be Heard

Articulate ideas through structured leadership conversations and interviews.

05 — Build Your Campaign

Create posters, videos, speeches and campaign messages.

06 — Face Your Peers

Answer questions directly from fellow learners.

07 — Vote Responsibly

Understand that democracy is as much about being a thoughtful voter as it is about being a candidate.

08 — Lead

Take responsibility as an elected representative of the learner community.

Learners were assessed and mentored around communication, initiative, listening, respect, teamwork, social awareness, responsibility and inclusion—not simply popularity.

The Learner Voice

If we ask children to lead, we must be prepared to trust them with something real.

One of the boldest choices we made this year was to place the Investiture Ceremony itself in the hands of our learners.

Our learners took on emceeing responsibilities across age groups, including several who were stepping onto such a stage for the first time.

There were easier ways to organise the ceremony, but leadership cannot be learnt entirely through observation. Sometimes, you have to hand over the microphone.

The learner-led nature of the ceremony became one of the aspects stakeholders appreciated most.

Everyone Deserves the Opportunity to Lead

Leadership should never belong only to the loudest voice in the room.

One of the moments that meant the most to us this year was seeing a learner with special educational needs elected by fellow learners to the Council.

Not appointed, Elected.

It represented the kind of community we want 21K School to build, one where every learner has an equitable opportunity to participate, contribute, be heard and lead.

From Learner Leadership to School Leadership

Understanding how decisions are made is part of learning how to make them.

After their election, Council members had the opportunity to interact directly with the Principal and School Leadership Team.

They were introduced to leadership structures, responsibilities, governance, collaboration and decision-making and, importantly, began exploring how learner representatives can meaningfully contribute to the school community.

For a young learner, this changes leadership from an abstract idea into something tangible:

People listen.
People deliberate.
People take responsibility.
And their decisions affect others.

It Takes a School to Raise a Leader

Every confident learner has people behind the scenes who chose to believe in them.

The Learner Council journey brought together people from across 21K School, our facilitators, leadership, technology, academic teams, HR, marketing, training and development, languages and support functions.

Some mentored candidates.

Some enabled technology.

Some helped learners prepare campaigns.

Some rehearsed speeches.

Some coordinated the ceremony.

Some simply showed up and told a learner:

"We are here to see you lead."

Every contribution mattered.

And that is an important lesson in leadership too:

Great things are rarely achieved alone.

The Council journey was supported through detailed planning, continuous facilitator mentoring and cross-team coordination, including extensive preparation beyond regular school hours.

Mentored by Leadership. Prepared to Lead.

Leadership became even more meaningful when our Learner Council members had the opportunity to be personally mentored by Yeshwanth Raaj Parasmal, Founder & CEO of 21K School. The session moved beyond titles and responsibilities to explore what leadership really demands: clarity of thought, courage in decision-making, empathy, accountability, and the confidence to represent others with integrity.

Through candid conversations, real examples, and direct guidance, learners were encouraged to think like leaders rather than simply act like office-bearers. The mentoring helped them see their roles beyond just positions to hold, but as responsibilities to grow into.

More importantly, it gave them early access to the mindset of leadership: listening before speaking, owning decisions, learning from mistakes, and understanding that meaningful influence begins with trust.

What We Hope They Carry Forward

This Council will take decisions.

It will represent learner perspectives.

It will initiate conversations.

It will create ideas.

But its greatest impact may not be visible during this academic year.

It may emerge years later—in a meeting where one of these learners has the confidence to question an idea.

In a team where they make room for another person's voice.

In a difficult decision where they choose integrity over convenience.

Or in a moment when someone needs a person willing to step forward.

Because ultimately, the purpose of the 21K Learner Council is not simply to create better student representatives.

It is to help raise thoughtful, courageous and responsible human beings.

This Is Their Council.
This Is Their Voice.
This Is Their Time to Lead.
