Sushma Swaraj, a vigorous opponent of the Emergency, ran in the Haryana state elections as a candidate of the Janata Party. She was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1977 to 1982 and then again from 1987 to 1990.

She was in charge of several vital ministries as an MLA and an influential party leader, including Social Welfare, Labor, Employment, Education, Food, and Civil Supplies. She eventually attained one of the most male-dominated positions in India: Minister of External Affairs, from 2014 to 2019. However, her commitment, intelligence, and diligence ultimately got her there. After Indira Gandhi, Swaraj was the only woman to hold this esteemed post.
