A school day designed around how children learn

At 21K School, Puducherry, the day is planned as a balanced journey rather than a long sequence of lessons. Learners move between focused academic work, conversation, hands-on exploration, physical activity, creative expression and time with their peers. This variety helps children sustain attention, apply what they learn and develop the habits needed to become increasingly independent.

The school operates Monday to Friday across a two-term academic year. Pre-Primary learners are expected to attend from approximately 8:30 am to 12 noon, while the full day for Grades 1 to 8 is expected to run from approximately 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Final timings and routines will be communicated to enrolled families before the school opens.

How the day unfolds

The day begins with arrival, settling in and opportunities for informal play or interaction. A morning assembly or community gathering helps learners connect with the wider school, reflect on shared values and prepare for the day ahead.

Academic sessions are designed to be active and purposeful. Depending on the age group and subject, learners may listen, discuss, practise, investigate, read, write, solve problems or work collaboratively. Short and long recesses are built into the day, and lessons are sequenced with attention to children’s energy and concentration.

Arts, sport, laboratories, clubs, projects and making are part of the regular learning experience. The final part of the day may include Zero Period: protected time for enrichment, reinforcement or remediation according to learner needs. This creates space to extend a strength, revisit an idea or receive additional support without treating every child’s learning journey as identical.

Different stages, appropriate expectations

In Pre-Primary, routines prioritise play, language, movement, exploration and a secure transition between home and school. As learners enter Primary and Middle School, the day becomes progressively more structured while continuing to include choice, collaboration and practical work. Learners are expected to develop responsibility for their materials, deadlines and participation at an age-appropriate pace.

Technology is used with purpose. Nursery to KG2 learners will not use laptops or the Computer Lab as part of their regular programme. Grades 1 and 2 may use the Computer Lab or a device at home when required. From Grade 3, learners will require the prescribed laptop with a webcam and headphones; a limited day-loan facility is planned through the library.

Learning beyond a timetable

A meaningful school day is also shaped by relationships. Facilitators observe how learners participate, collaborate and respond to challenge. House activities, clubs, performances, exhibitions and learner-led conferences create additional opportunities for belonging, service, leadership and confidence. The aim is for every learner to leave school having made progress academically and personally.
