How Many Attempts for JEE Advanced After 12th

Are you wondering how many attempts are allowed in the JEE Advanced examination after 12th?

Since many students are preparing for the JEE, it is important to check the attempt limit and eligibility criteria for the examination.

So let us understand how many attempts for JEE Advanced after 12th and attempt rules, Class 12 eligibility, and other important aspects you should know before appearing for the exam.

JEE Advanced Attempt Limit – The Official Rule Explained

The Joint Admission Board states that the maximum number of attempts one can have for the JEE Advanced is two times in two consecutive years. The time period of attempting the JEE Advanced begins from the year when a candidate appears in their Class 12 board exam. They can take the exam in the same year and also the next year.

Full JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria for 2025 and 2026

Apart from the attempt limit, candidates must meet the eligibility criteria of the Joint Admission Board and the IIT’s to register for JEE Advanced every year. Now let us go through various categories mentioned below.

1. Qualifying through JEE Main

Each year, the top 2,50,000 students who have qualified in the JEE Main 2026 exam can appear for the JEE Advanced exam.

2. Age limit

The candidates who have been successful in qualifying in the JEE Advanced 2026 examination under the General and OBC categories must have been born on or after October 1, 2001. The SC/ST/PwD category candidates get an age relaxation of five years.

3. Subject Requirements in Class 12

Students who want to get into IITs need to compulsorily choose Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics subjects in Class 12 or equivalent board examinations from a recognised board.

4. Class 12 Appearance Year

The JEE Advanced eligibility criteria will be based on the year of appearance for the Class 12 or equivalent examination in the year 2025 or 2026 by the candidate.

Year of first Class 12 attemptEligibility criteria for JEE Advanced yearly attempts
20262026 and 2027
20252025 and 2026
2024 or beforeNot eligible for JEE Advanced 2026

5. IIT Admission History

The candidates cannot be admitted to an IIT under any program mentioned earlier in the JoSAA business rules. Those who were provided a seat but withdrew before the last round or those who did not report online at the centre are eligible to apply. Students getting admission to a preparatory course for the first time in the previous year can also apply for the coming year.

The November 2024 Policy Reversal – What Happened & What It Means

While there was an increase of attempts to three announced by the Joint Admission Board on November 5, 2024, it was soon withdrawn 13 days later on November 18, 2024, bringing the attempt limit back to two attempts.

The Supreme Court ruled that students who dropped out of college between November 5 and November 18, 2024, can appear in the JEE Advanced examination for up to three attempts. The court refused to change the general two-attempt limit for everyone else.

Common Scenarios – Am I Still Eligible for JEE Advanced?

Let us look at some of the scenarios students need to consider before appearing for JEE Advanced.

Scenario 1 – I Registered but Did not Appear for the Exam

When a student registers for the JEE Advanced examination but does not appear for the exam, it does not count at all as an attempt. Usually, only when a candidate appears for the exam is the attempt counted.

Scenario 2 – I Am a Dropper After Class 12

Many students take a concept of a drop year to prepare better before attempting the second time. If the candidate appears for Class 12 for the first time in 2025, then he may attempt for the first time in 2025, and the second attempt will be in 2026. But if they skip in 2025, then their only attempt remains in 2026.

Scenario 3 – I Appeared for Class 12 in 2024

If a candidate attempted the Class 12 board exam for the first time in 2024, then the validity period for the first attempt is JEE Advanced 2024, and the second attempt includes JEE Advanced 2025. Students cannot apply for JEE Advanced 2026 as they will be able to attempt the exam only twice within two consecutive years.

Scenario 4 – I Belong to SC/ST/PwD Category

The standard number of attempts is uniform for all categories. Students from SC, ST, and PwD categories receive age relaxation up to 5 years. The reserved seats for IIT admissions and lower cutoff qualifying options.

JEE Main vs JEE Advanced – How Do Attempts Differ?

Students preparing for engineering entrance examinations need to understand that the number of attempts rules for JEE Main and JEE Advanced have a huge difference. In the JEE Main exam, candidates can appear for a maximum of two attempts held each year.

The number of attempts can be up to six attempts under the existing eligibility criteria, which is the result of three years of examination.

On the other hand, JEE Advanced has a very strict attempt policy. The number of attempts permitted for JEE Advanced is two attempts within two consecutive years.

As the exam is held only once a year, there is less chance for candidates to better their performance. JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility Criteria also mention the required appearances of Class 12.

There is another significant point that students taking  JEE Advanced 2026 should be among the top 2,50,000 candidates who qualified in the relevant category of JEE Main B.E./B.Tech.

Strategic Advice – Planning Your JEE Advanced Attempts Wisely

Students appearing for JEE Advanced can go through the strategic plan attempts discussed below.

1. Focus on Core Concepts

Candidates need to understand the fundamental concepts in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics effectively instead of rote memorisation. Attempt a mock test to find out what your strong and weak areas are, and improve your weak points before proceeding to advanced-level questions.

2. Use Limited but Reliable Study Resources

Students can read NCERT textbooks for the JEE examination to build basic knowledge and save time instead of reading other study materials. Revising the same material again and again is far better than reading from various sources.

3. Practice Advanced Problems Regularly

Candidates can solve complex problems and refer to previous year question papers with multiple concepts. This habit of practising can help students perform effectively and answer questions quickly.

4. Maintain a Balanced Subject-wise Approach

Allocate equal weightage to all three subjects, but pay additional heed to the topics that carry more marks. Consistency can be improved through revision and by taking mock tests and practising topic-wise.

JEE Advanced 2026 – Attempt Rules and Key Eligibility Updates

The latest update about the attempt rules and eligibility criteria for the JEE Advanced examination is mentioned below.

2. Key Eligibility Updates

Students need to rank among the first 2,50,000 in the B.E/B. Tech paper of JEE Main 2026. Your first attempt at Class 12 or its equivalent examination, which should include Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, should be in either 2025 or 2026.

For the general category, candidates need to be born on or after 1st October 2001. Students from SC/ST/PwD should be born on or after 1st October 1996 since they have 5 years of relaxation in age.

Official Resources and How to Check Your Eligibility
